2009 Season

2009 has been the most successful season the club has had for a number of years, especially in the mixed leagues. As always, teams were entered into both the NW Norfolk and P&H leagues, with the stronger teams the Norfolk league as tradition has dictated.

The Men’s team in the Norfolk league got off to a bad start, losing two of their players who helped them win promotion last season. Luckily there were some good players ready to step in and start their campaign in Division 1 for the first time in a number of seasons. Unfortunately with this change of personnel it took a while to find the correct formation and saw the team pick up a few early defeats. They ended the season stronger than they started but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to keep them in the top division.

The Mixed team had an almost perfect season by only drawing one match and winning all the others - 6 of which were 8-0 victories. The players know that next season will be a completely different story but are welcoming the challenge that Division 1 will provide.

In the P&H league, the mixed team found a winning set up and were able to stick to that throughout the season which saw them mirror the WN team by winning the Division. This is the first time that a Wisbech team has been promoted since re-entering the Peterborough league a few seasons ago. The team won seven of their nine matches, drew one, and lost the other. Division 4 should provide a stiffer challenge but the team should be more than capable of dealing with the teams at that level.

The P&H Men’s team had an up and down season only playing four of the six matches that needed to be played. The two that were not played were classed as a win and a draw. The other results saw the team secure two wins and also two losses. This resulted in the team finishing in third place meaning that promotion was only missed by one place.

The Ladies’ teams enjoyed some relative success, although the teams were used to give the most of the ladies a chance to play competitive matches. The two teams notched up a few wins between them which was positive seeing as most players had either never played matches before or had not played with each other competitively.

2008 Season

The 2008 season was a good season for the Wisbech Tennis Club. Every team involved made considerable improvements over their positions from the previous season and encountered a greater range of players of all standards and abilities, gaining valuable match play experience at a more competitive level.

In the West Norfolk Men’s Division 2, the team enjoyed a very good season only losing two out of ten matches, drawing one and winning seven, of which some were 8-0 victories. Thanks to these very positive results it means that the men’s team earned themselves a promotion and will be challenging the top teams in the area in Division 1 for the 2009 season.

The Ladies team within the North West Norfolk League, finished mid table, after winning two matches, drawing one and losing the other three. However, the ladies enjoyed the challenge of playing tougher opposition and the scores did not always reflect the closeness of the game.

The Mixed team were trying to gain Division 1 status again this season in the North West Norfolk League and have ended up in third place in this Division and therefore just miss out on promotion. They lost three hard fought matches but won all their other matches.

For the 2008 season, Wisbech Tennis Club decided to enter two new teams with a Men’s team for the first time, and a second Mixed team into the Peterborough and Hunts league. This was purely down to the number of members who wanted to play matches but were not given the opportunity to do so in previous years. Due to the success of these teams and the demand to play in them, they are being continued in the 2009 season.

The new Men’s team was entered into Division 5 and experienced mixed results. As it was the first season for this team there was little prior knowledge to how strong the competition would be. Despite this they still managed to pick up two wins and two draws out of seven matches which gave them a mid table finish. With encouraging results the team can only go on to improve in the future.

The two Mixed teams were both in Division 5 for the 2008 season and received very similar results. The ‘A’ team finished just below the ‘B’ team due to a match that was called at a draw, where they finished in 6th and 5th place respectively. The ‘A’ team had a good start to the season with a win against the ‘B’ team and went on to win another two matches and draw two more. The ‘B’ team enjoyed a more successful second half of the season where they picked up four wins.

The Ladies team were also in Division 5 and secured three wins, with the pairing being rotated around, to allow more players to get to competitive play and gain valuable experience match play.
