Last Sunday the club took part in the annual West Norfolk Rosebowl tournament at Hunstanton. The tournament includes men’s, ladies, and mixed matches and with 6 teams entering, it meant there were 10 sets of tennis to be played by each person over an 8 hour period. It was a tough day playing against most clubs’ ‘A’ teams but there was still some very positive results. The men won three and drew one of their five men’s matches and were the only team to beat eventual winners Broadland Sands. The ladies and mixed teams had some good results as well, although no clear wins. Playing for Wisbech was James Newton, Rhys Thomas, Daniel Bambridge, Rachel Collins, Claire Brown, and Maureen Roberts.
Also on Sunday was the club's annual junior tournament. For more information on this tournament - see here.
On Wednesday night the P & H Mixed ‘B’ team played their final match of the season at home to Thorpewood ‘B’. A win would guarantee the ‘A’ team would win the league and after winning 5-3, they were able to do that. The team was made up of John Chapman, Pauline Maris, Gary Fitzjohn, and Kitty Hall. With the ‘A’ team beating Thorpewood in the first match of the season, Wisbech are the only club to have beaten that team this year.
Thursday night the West Norfolk Men’s team played away to Aldiss Park where they lost 3-5 to their stronger opponents. James Newton, Daniel Bambridge, Rhys Thomas, and John Chapman made up the Wisbech team. |

With the mid season break taking up the next two weeks, matches are few and far between. On Monday night the Peterborough and Hunts Mixed ‘A’ team took part in the Don Brace Cup where they had to play a Hemingford’s team four divisions above them. Stuart Sage and Kath Stokes managed to pick up one set against their number two pair but unfortunately that was all the team could manage. The other pairing of Dan Bambridge and Rachel Collins made up the team which lost out 1-7.
Tuesday night was a good night for the West Norfolk ladies team as they defeated West Norfolk ‘C’ 7-1. Playing for Wisbech was Rachel Collins, Sue Beel, Margaret Mee, and Pauline Maris. The team can take some confidence going into the second half of the season after a steady opening few matches.
In singles competition, Dan Bambridge competed in round two of the Cambs Open but was unfortunate to come up against a 2008 finalist. After a close couple of opening games, the experience and stability of his opponent Jack Bowden won through. Dan and James Newton will be taking part in the Cambs Open - Men’s Doubles on July 10th. |

After a disappointing previous week of results for the club, this past week saw a return to winning form for the Mixed teams in action. On Tuesday night the West Norfolk Mixed team secured a 4-4 draw with Terrington ‘B’ which was an improvement on last year’s loss. Playing for the team was James Newton, Rachel Collins, Rhys Thomas, and Margaret Pendall.
Also playing on Tuesday was the Peterborough and Hunts Mixed ‘B’ team which comprised of Dave Russ, Pauline Maris, Matt Goodwin, and Kitty Hall. Matt and Kitty had played a good game and came away with four sets, with the other pair picking up the much needed fifth to give them a 5-3 win over Ketton ‘C’.
To round off the week the P & H Mixed ‘A’ team faced St Neot’s ‘B’ at home and despite not playing their best tennis, they were able to pick up an 8-0 win. Making up the Wisbech team was Daniel Bambridge, Rachel Collins, Stuart Sage and Sue Beel. |

It’s been a week of mixed results for the Wisbech teams – four of which had matches this past week. First up was the Peterborough and Hunts Mixed ‘B’ team who played host to St Neots ‘B’ where they were able to pick up a well deserved draw. Playing for Wisbech was John Chapman, Jane Page, Gary Fitzjohn, and Pauline Maris.
On Thursday the P & H ‘A’ team suffered their first defeat of the season away to Ramsey ‘D’ with a 3-5 scoreline. With a walkover already guaranteed against Ketton ‘C’ who could not field a team, a win in the final fixture should still secure a promotion to Division Four. The unlucky losing team was made up of Daniel Bambridge, Rachel Collins, Stuart Sage, and Kath Stokes.
The West Norfolk Men’s team picked up their first win of the season, beating Burnham Market 5-3. It was some consolation having lost 2-6 when they played away. The winning side comprised of James Newton, Matt Goodwin, Rhys Thomas, and John Chapman
Last but certainly not least was the West Norfolk Ladies’ team who were able to steal a draw against Dersingham after having lost 0-8 at home just a few weeks previously. The team was made up of Rachel Collins, Margaret Pendall, Sheila Hennessey, and Kitty Hall.
