Only two matches took place this week with both Peterborough and Hunts ladies teams in action - against each other. Playing for the ‘B’ team was Claire Brown, Kath Stokes, Sheila Hennessey, and Margaret Mee. The ‘C’ team consisted of Sue Pitcher, Sue Beel, Kitty Hall, and Sue Tolliday. On a hot evening the game was very tense and nerve wracking with the match ending in a 4-4 draw.

On Friday the ‘C’ team had another match playing host to Chatteris ‘B’.  Sue Pitcher, Sue Beel, Kitty Hall, and Jane Page played on this occasion where they were beaten 6-2.

Saturday saw the Hunstanton tournament come to a close for another year. With perfect weather all week there were no delays meaning all finals took place as scheduled. All Wisbech players enjoyed themselves although none were among the winners. Rachael Stevenson and her partner Tess Thompson reached the under 18 girls’ doubles final where they played well but unfortunately lost 6-1 6-4. The men’s and ladies’ events were retained by the same winners as last year - Will Mason and Helen Povah.

Sunday was Finals Day and the American Tournament - details to follow on those shortly!

With the season drawing to a close, only the Peterborough Ladies’ teams were in action this week. On Monday the Ladies ‘A’ team travelled to Stamford ‘D’ where the team of Sue Beel, Claire Brown, Kath Stokes, and Margaret Mee came away with an 8-0 loss against stronger opposition.

The Ladies ‘A’ team also played host to Thorpewood ‘B’ on Wednesday night and with bad light halting play, they lost 6-1 to a talented team of younger players. The Wisbech team consisted of Margaret Mee, Sheila Hennessey, Claire Brown, and Kath Stokes. To end the week the 'B' team were able to pick up a win against Needingworth 'C'. Another match halted by bad light saw Wisbech come away with a 6-1 win. In the victorious team were Sue Beel, Kitty Hall, Sue Pitcher, and Jane Page.

Hunstanton Tennis Week kicked off on Sunday 16th and saw some Wisbech players take to the grass courts. Jack Briggs lead the way for the boys as he won both his singles (6-1 6-1) and his doubles first round matches, teaming up with another Wisbech junior. Unfortunately that was the only Wisbech player to progress to the second round with two other’s unfortunate not to make it through. For the girls, there are two youngsters playing later in the week and Rachael Stevenson eased through the under 16’s singles with a 6-1 6-2 win. She teamed up with Thomas Emmerson from Boston TC in the under 18’s mixed - where they won 6-1 6-0.

This week saw two of the Wisbech teams complete their matches for the 2009 season. The West Norfolk Men’s team had two away matches in four days. First up was Terrington ‘A’ where they were unfortunate not to get a draw, losing out 5-3. In the second match they played league leaders West Norfolk ‘A’ who ran away with the match 8-0 and were too strong for the Wisbech team. Playing in both matches were James Newton, Daniel Bambridge, Rhys Thomas, and John Chapman. Unfortunately this means the team will move back into Division 2 but have the incentive of trying again next year to return to the top division.

Also finishing of their season was the West Norfolk Mixed team who were able to complete their unbeaten season with their fourth 8-0 victory against KES teams. The Wisbech team consisted of James Newton, Lisa Kennedy, Rhys Thomas, and Margaret Pendall. This means that Wisbech are now into Division 1 which is the first time in a long while. After playing some of the top teams at the Rosebowl tournament, it will definitely be a hard season next year but I’m sure they’re up for the challenge!

In the Peterborough leagues the Ladies ‘B’ team had a tough trip to Buckden where the team of Sue Beel, Kitty Hall, Sue Pitcher, and Jane Page lost out 7-1 in a match interrupted by rain. The Peterborough Men’s team were able to turn around their two match losing streak by beating Longthorpe ‘C’ 5-3. The victorious team was made up of Stuart Sage, David Alpin, Matt Goodwin, and Ben Goose.

Several budding tennis players competed against each other in the orange practice matchplay on Sunday 26th July. The weather remained dry and a series of mini tie break matches were played. James Horsburgh was first with Jack Erkin runner up.

Well done to all those who played - it was good to see those players for whom it was their first tournament.
