Wisbech Tennis Club has entered 'The Road to Wimbledon' which is a national 14 and under challenge event. Eight players have entered, matches are being played in a knock-out format, with the best of 3 sets and the third set being a championship tie break first to 10 points. The winner and runner up of the club event go forward to play in the county finals, which will be held on the 17th and 18th of July 2010, at Thorpewood Heath and Racquets Club (Esporta), in Peterborough. The winners of the county finals will qualify for the national finals held at Wimbledon between 16th - 21st August.
This weekend sees the start of the 2010 season on the grass courts. With more teams than ever there's potential for everyone to play both social and competitive tennis. On Saturday the courts will be open for anyone to use. At 11am, there will be a junior tournament which will be run by Lisa and will finish at 1pm. Sunday is the John Bown Memorial Tournament which begins at 11am but registration will be from 10.30am onwards and will take place on the Astroturf courts situated behind our grass courts.
Starting Monday, club night will be moved back to the grass courts from 6.30pm until dark. There will normally be people there from 6pm onwards and somebody will greet you and organise similar standard sets. Thursday is also similar but is not quite so structured so everyone will get a chance to play with everyone.
Matches kick off this next week with both mixed and men's so if you would like to play please contact the captains on the contacts page. One match has already taken place in the Aegon Team Tennis competition, with Daniel Bambridge, James Newton, Rhys Thomas, and Daniel Maund heading to Huntingdon. Unfortunately they came up against a Division 1 standard team and came away with a loss.
Over the last few weeks, the groundforce sub-committee have been very busy preparing for the new season, and in particular, the new clubhouse we will be getting in the coming weeks. The inclusion of a much more appealing toilet block and a nicer place to sit and relax, should be beneficial to everyone. Because the sub-committee is made up of only a few members, tearing down the caravan and transporting off-site is going to be a big ask - we would be very grateful if a couple of people would be willing to come down on Saturday morning (16/03/10) to assist, which would be much appreciated.
The new clubhouse will most likely be the one in the following link, as long as there are no strong objections:
The Peter Peukert trophy was presented to Jack Goult by Faye Peukert and is for the most consistent player of 2009. Jac regularly attended both summer and winter coaching sessions and was always keen to improve his skills. He attended summer club night with the adults and also started to play in the league matches this season. He also took part in other club events such as the John Bown tournament.
Sunday 29th November Adam Groves went to Newmarket and played as a 9.2, he narrrowly lost his first match in a tie break but won his second match.
Sunday 6th December Oliver Warren, Oliver Potter and Lewis Chapman went to the new centre near Norwich, all 3 are rated 10.2 and Oliver Warren and Lewis Chapman each won a match which will count towards becoming a 10.1 player.
Also on Sunday 6th December our younger players were in action at Easton, Oliver Mitchell and Janardin Sundar both played in a mini tennis under 8 red level tournament, both played 6 matches which means they have moved up a rating to Red level 3. Well done to everyone who entered.
